THE INDIAN DRACULA
Bigger than Xmas? No not Diwali (although maybe) but Halloween, which every year seems to grow in prominence around the world - even the supermarkets and stores in South East Asia stock various plastic adornments in the shape of pumpkins and the undead.
Whilst Asian cultures have many deities that represent the fears of hunger (the Thai ghost, Phet for example) the common practice of cremation (as witnessed by the recent ceremony of the King Rama IX in Bangkok) limits stories of the undead coming back to life, as the spirit according to Hinduism and Buddhism is on its journey to Nirvana to be reincarnated anew.
But fortunately that doesn't stop writers from imagining horror stories of possessed students that seem to be popular in Asian cinema over the last decade. So it's a shame that Britain's horror factory Hammer Films was unable to make its film "The Unquenchable Thirst of Dracula", which would have placed the infamous Count of Transylvania in post-colonial India. Fortunately the good people at BBC Radio 4 (which you know that I'm a fan of whilst I work on the latest issue of Ramayana: The Thread of Luminance) have commissioned a radio adaption from Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss. It's good fun, if you have 90 minutes to spare you can listen here
The 2 part conclusion of the epic that is Ramayana: The Thread of Luminance draws to a close, as BHARATA finds out what has happened to his brothers over the last few months and the Vanara realise that they have won the war, but what will they do with the peace ? in BOOK 7 AN ARRAY OF KNOTS: ISSUE 1 Drawing up the Designs.
